Chronicles of My PMS
ABOUT
The menstrual cycle affects each individual’s life in unique ways. For me, its impact is particularly pronounced during the premenstrual syndrome (PMS) phase, when I experience significant fluctuations both physically and emotionally. As someone who has personally faced the challenges of PMS, I am deeply familiar with the frustration, confusion, and emotional turmoil it can bring. In my series of works dedicated to exploring PMS, I use the metaphor of knitting with yarn to symbolise the cyclical nature of menstruation. This particular illustration was inspired by the first time I truly felt the effects of PMS on my daily life. I had just finished work and was walking home. It was an otherwise ordinary day, yet an inexplicable sadness suddenly overcame me. Tears streamed down my face, glinting in the glow of the streetlights with every step I took. A few days later, when my period arrived, I realised that the intense emotional turbulence I had experienced was likely tied to my menstrual cycle. Over time, I have become more attuned to recognising these premenstrual depressive symptoms. As a naturally cheerful and optimistic person, the dramatic mood swings, unprovoked sadness, and occasional extreme thoughts accompanying PMS have underscored its profound influence. However, society’s tendency to overlook or misunderstand women’s emotional and physical symptoms means that many women are unaware that what they are experiencing could be PMS or even premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). This lack of awareness was echoed in the responses to a questionnaire I conducted during my preliminary research, which revealed that societal focus predominantly centers on menstruation itself, with little attention given to the premenstrual phase. Through my creative work, I aim to send a message to those navigating PMS or PMDD: you are not alone. Your experiences are valid and deserve recognition. While we may not always be able to control these symptoms, we can seek ways to release or distract ourselves, find outlets for self-expression, and prioritise our health and well-being.
